At a glance
What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before deciding — clearly and honestly.
The education
Most master's degrees are just 1 year — saving both time and money. Among the most globally recognised qualifications.
The true cost
Fees look high, but the 1-year format lowers total investment. Use the ROI tool below to model your own numbers.
Safety & visa
Check the latest MEA advisory before you travel. The Graduate Route allows a 2-year stay if you apply by 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027.
Top universities
A selection of universities popular with Maharashtra students, with indicative tuition.
After you graduate
Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.
The Graduate visa lets you stay and work for 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026; applications made from 1 January 2027 are granted 18 months. PhD graduates get 3 years. It is unsponsored and does not require a job offer.
Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.
- Work at any level — no sponsor or job offer needed
- 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027
- Switchable to Skilled Worker visa
- 3 years for PhD graduates
Visa, work & money rules
The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.
Visa & permit fees
The Student visa application fee is £558 when you apply from outside the UK. You also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £776 per year for yourself and each dependant, upfront for the full length of the visa and separately from the visa fee.
Work while studying
Degree-level students can work up to 20 hours a week during term time (10 hours a week below degree level) and full-time during vacations, subject to their visa conditions.
Family & dependants
Since January 2024, most taught-master's and undergraduate students cannot bring dependants. Dependants are generally allowed only for students on PhD/doctoral or research programmes, courses of nine months or longer where allowed, or government-sponsored students.
Proof of funds
You must show living-cost funds, held for 28 consecutive days, in addition to your first year's tuition, for up to 9 months. Until 29 November 2026 this is £1,529 a month for courses in London and £1,171 a month outside London. From 30 November 2026 (already enacted in Statement of Changes HC 584) it rises to £1,570 a month in London and £1,203 a month outside London.
