At a glance

What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before deciding — clearly and honestly.

The education

Master's are English-taught. Strong in engineering, sustainability and design; close industry links (Ericsson, Volvo, Spotify).

The true cost

Tuition is moderate; scholarships from universities and the Swedish Institute help. Living costs are high.

Safety & visa

Check the latest MEA advisory before you travel. A permit of up to 12 months to look for work can follow graduation.

After you graduate

Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.

If you complete a higher-education programme of at least two semesters and are eligible, you can apply for a residence permit to look for work or explore starting a business. It is granted for up to 12 months to bachelor's and master's graduates, and for 12–18 months to doctoral graduates. If you find qualifying employment, you can apply for a work permit from within Sweden.

Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.

Visa, work & money rules

The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.

Visa & permit fees

The application fee for a residence permit for studies is SEK 1,500.

Work while studying

There is no fixed legal limit on your weekly working hours, but your studies must remain your main activity and you must keep making satisfactory academic progress.

Family & dependants

Your spouse, registered or cohabiting partner and children under 18 can apply for residence permits together with you, subject to maintenance and other requirements. Adult family members, and children who turn at least 16 during the year, can work if their family permits are granted.

Proof of funds

You must show maintenance of SEK 10,656 per month for the study period (2026 rate), in addition to tuition. This is a visa requirement, separate from actual living costs.

Health insurance

Your healthcare depends on how long you stay. If your total continuous permit period is under one year, you generally need comprehensive private health insurance. If you stay more than one year, register in the population register to get access to Swedish health and medical care.
