Visa, work & money rules

Student visa
As an Indian or other non-EU student, you apply for a residence permit for the purpose of studies through the competent Hungarian diplomatic mission. If you are not visa-exempt, this application also includes the visa that lets you enter Hungary to collect the residence permit. A separate student Visa D application is not normally required.
Visa & permit fees
The residence permit for studies costs €110 when you apply at a Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission abroad. If you receive a Hungarian State Scholarship such as Stipendium Hungaricum, you are exempt from this administrative service fee.
Family & dependants
Current rule: if you hold a Hungarian residence permit for studies, you cannot sponsor family members for a residence permit for family reunification. The same restriction applies while you hold the post-study permit for seeking a job or starting a business. A limited exception exists for a child born in Hungary while the parent’s residence permit is valid.
Proof of funds
You must prove sufficient lawful financial resources for subsistence, accommodation, return or onward travel and healthcare during your stay — through bank statements, regular income or qualifying financial support. You also need evidence of tuition payment and accommodation. OIF does not publish one universal, fixed monthly funds threshold for students.
