At a glance

What a student from Maharashtra needs to know before deciding — clearly and honestly.

The education

Public universities charge modest fees for non-EU students. Vienna's universities are strong in business and engineering.

The true cost

Affordable tuition and reasonable living costs make Austria good value within German-speaking Europe.

Safety & visa

Check the latest MEA advisory before you travel. A residence permit to seek work for up to 12 months is available after graduation.

After you graduate

Post-study work rights are the most important factor — and the most likely to change. Here is the position as of today.

After graduation, you can apply for a residence permit to look for work for up to 12 months. Once you have qualifying employment, you can move to the Red-White-Red Card.

Immigration rules, eligibility and salary thresholds change frequently and without notice. Always verify the latest official guidance before you apply, and never treat any figure here as a guarantee of future entitlement.

Visa, work & money rules

The official rules behind your visa, work, family and budget planning. Rules change often, so confirm each point on the official government or university website before you apply.

Visa & permit fees

The student residence permit fee is €218 (application and card charges combined).

Work while studying

Non-EU students can work with an employment permit, which the employer applies for. Permitted hours are limited — bachelor’s students can typically work up to about 20 hours a week — and depend on labour-market conditions.

Family & dependants

Family reunification is available under the applicable route, subject to income, insurance and accommodation requirements.

Proof of funds

Proof of means (2026 rates): €722.58 per month if you are under 24, and €1,308.39 per month if you are 24 or over. Rent above about €361.94 per month must be added to the required amount. This is a visa requirement, separate from actual living costs.

Health insurance

You must hold health insurance covering all risks to get the residence permit. Student statutory insurance is available if you qualify.
